Memory Monday:Sleep Study or Discomfort Study...... I don't know!

For years I have struggled with sleep problems. This year it has just increased and gotten really annoying. I went to see a sleep doctor who diagnosed me with night-time anxiety and also ordered an overnight sleep study at a sleep center her in Provo, Utah by Wills pitstop. I was to check in on Saturday night at 8 pm. Also to have dry hair, a clean face with no lotions or cleansers on it and that is about what I knew about it.

What an experience!! You can't go into this sleep clinic and be prepared for what will take place! It was CRAZY yet pretty humorous!
I checked in at 8pm and buzzed the office door bell. A very nice nurse came and introduced herself to me. ( I wish I could for the life of me remember their names.. they rocked!) I noticed that this office was in the same complex as Dr. Pledgers office so jokingly I said to the nurse.. when I go to sleep tonight do you do a 2 for 1 treatment... tummy tuck and sleep study? She laughed and we were instant friends from there on out.
She took me to a bedroom that was so nicely decorated and welcoming. (minus the hospital equipment there) They advised me to switch into my jammies and prepare myself the way I normally do for bed and when I was done to open my door and they would be in to start the process. I folded down my bed and got myself all comfortable and then opened the door and the process began.
The two nurses came in with a cart of computer looking wires. They had glue, sticker type bandages things, colores pencils you name it. One proceeded to mark up my head and measure it in every sort of way. The other started working on my legs, chest and and such. We had a great conversation and started laughing and carrying on. By the time I was done and looked in the mirror I was astounded at how many wires they had hooked up in 1 hour! I told the nurse that I needed to most definately blog this experience! She was so much fun. I was making faces and we were laughing! Then I layed down in one of the most comfortable beds that I have ever slept in and watched Tommy boy on TV. It was good comedy relief. It was getting later and later and although I was relaxed.. I was NOT tired. At 11:10ish there was a knock at my door and the nurse said time for sleepy! She came and added EVEN MORE wires and contraptions. She put something on my finger, a nose tube on my nose and another contraption over my nose that would gage the temperature. For about an hour and half.. I sat there flipping, flopping, figgiting because I was uncomfortable and not tired enough to fall asleep. I even got tangled up in my cords so much that the nurse had to help me get untangled.. we got a good laugh about that.
I was trying so hard to sleep, hello! That was the whole purpose I was there. The nurse came it at that hour and half mark and said, "Megan, you are breaking my heart watching you struggle so much to sleep!" I said welcome to my life every night! She then had me sit up and said here is an Ambien (sleep pill) this should help you right away. She then turned on the air conditioner unit and that is the last thing I remembered. At 6am she came in to wake me up and told me that she got some good results to tell my doctor that would hopefully help me get some answers to my sleep patterns. She had me get dressed, wash my face and go home. Aparently I went home and went right to bed. I woke up at 12:30pm and was in my own bed and wondered how I got there and was not at the sleep clinic (it took me a few hours to remember being woke up and sent home), sleep medicine is SCARY!

Memory Monday: Lions and Tigers and SUNBURNS OH MY!

I figured that for the end of the summer blog I should remind myself of the most painful, horrible sunburn I have ever had! My roomies and I went to San Juan Puerto Rico this March for a few days.... We got to visit the 3rd most beautiful beach in the whole world.

This is me at 5:00 am ready to go to a beach.. I was excited! To go to this Beach we had to get up at 4:30 am to buy tickets in a city about 1 hour away. We then had to go by boat to the "secluded beach."(it took about 1 hour by speed boat). Oddly enough while waiting in line we found out that the 2 girls in front of us in line (they are on the bottom left of the picture above) were also Mormon. How on earth did we find the Mormon girls in a group of many on the boat?! Well the picture above is all the LDS girls that had csme together to go to Culebra too! We instantly bonded with them!On the speed boat my roommate Megan Ennis got very ill and this is her leaning over the boat ready to loose it (there were many other people all over the boat doing the same thing!) The driver thought he was in the indy 500 and we were hitting HUGE waves and were all drenched wet and sick when we finally arrived. By the way, do you see the bottle of rubbing alchol being passed? The natives gave us that. Apparently it is a cure for sea sickness... and it works WONDERS!

When we arrived there, I honestly thought I had arrived in Heaven! GORGEOUS!
Yes, this is all white sand beach... fine sand and see through waters! To tell you the truth regular oceans scare me to death cause you can't see what is around you... I rarely left these waters the hours we were here!
I'm pretty sure my sunburn began on the boat... and this 25 min of laying on the beach just sealed the deal.. added to my 3 hours playing in the ocean....I wasn't the only one that got beat up from the sun! We all had our own severities... take a look at the first stages...
We showed up at a rite aid in San Juan searching for some Aloe vera... you should have seen all of us wobbling in, our bodies in the shakes, with the teeth chattering! We were trying to figure out how to say Aloe Vera in spanish. We laughed so hard and had to take a picture because when we walked in the door, forget the language barrier, or dear girl friends at rite aid new what we needed and handed it to us.. we were pathetic looking... as you can see!

This is Stephanie Nelson..aka Ghetto. Her burn was concentrated to her upper thighs and on her face (her lips got all swollen...HUGE!) She ended up in urgent care the 2nd day after we got home!Jon Portie's was all over his back. Don't ask me how he did it, but his wore off with minimal pain.Bethany Stewart (or "B") showed this part of her sunburn but by the time we got back to Orem her blisters were the size of silver dollars all over her legs. She went to urgent care straight off the plane! If she would let me get a hold of the nasty pictures of her burn I would post them! I don't think I will see anything like that in my life! As smiley as this picture looks.. I was absolutely miserable. But my burn kept progressing... my body had a major sun reaction and I ended up with 3rd degree (blackish burns)across my biceps. My bicepts felt everyday like some one was taking a hold wrench and turning my skin tighter and tighter. I had so much applying of creams and gels and so much cleaning that needed to be done to the blisters and amazingly enough my brand new roomie of a week or so, Teresa Allen, attended to me several times a day to relieve some discomfort! Thanks Teresa!

By day 3 after being burnt I was in agony. My Mom and my brother were both out of town and my roommates were miserable so I call my BFF Jen to come down from Salt lake and take me to urgent care. My blisters were on my shoulder and they were tiny and all over... they would pop all day. I was a mess! As graphic and ugly as all these pictures are, I want to depict why I am never going to go in the sun without adequate protection again!

Me and all my millions of blisters! The side view for a 3 demensional look (SICK!)

Trying to take a decent picture of what my face (that looked like I had severe leprosy) really looked like! But in reality I had really HAD IT! The pain was aggrevating and the discomfort immense. I took this at 3 am after being awake all night... I was really crying and I took this picture so I would never forget the majesty of that sunburn.

All the ugly pictures aside there is one thing that I said to my roomies over and over again when we were first struggling with sunburns... I wish I had brought my Burn Free. When I worked at Emergency Essentials I sold this awesome product that is called BURNFREE® Pain Relieving Gel .

Add instant relief and halt the progress of burn injuries with this remarkable product! Made mostly of water, BurnFree is specifically developed for first-aid use on burns and scalds. It is used extensively by paramedics and burn centers across the country, and it’s even used by Hollywood stunt personnel. It will cool, soothe and moisten the burn as it relieves pain. It’s also completely non-adhesive, nontoxic, and won’t irritate skin. This amazing product is a first-aid kit essential and is exactly what you need for instant burn relief. Keep a supply at home and in your automobile, and don’t leave home without some extra BurnFree products on your next camping trip.

BURNFREE® Pain Relieving Gel is seriously amazing stuff and EVERY household should have it.

What it does is it STOPS the progression of the burn so that your body doesn't hold in all that heat! If I had had something to stop the progression of my burn ( it was prossing 5 days after) I would have never gotten my 3 degree burns on my arms. When I went to the Urdent care 3 days after we returned, the doctor had to give me steriods to stop the burn. All in all my urgent care bill was well over $200 (because I haven't met my deductible). First of course I wish I would have used adequate sun screen but then I wish my burnfree was in my bag. It is worth every penny and even if you or your child just burns themself on the stove... you will be thankful you have it! Get it at http://www.beprepared.com/ or your local Emergency Essential stores for $3.99 for a 4oz bottle.

The moral of this memory.... The sun is harsher in some places than it is in others. I wish I had been prepared with sunblock and my burn free.... the end!

Memory Monday: American Idol 2007

American Idol Tour 2007: Utah Style

We are weird and we are proud of it!

Overjoyed to be with my favorite season of the IDOL!

I was looking through some pictures today and laughing my head off!! I found these pictures of when Melba Latu and I went to the American Idol concert. The 2007 group was my favorite! We had a blast!

Melba played a game with me called "What's your reaction" and then named a few of the performers... here are the pictures of what I think when I hear there names:

Melinda Doolittle

Sanjaya

Chris Richardson

Blake Lewis

Melba and I at the Tour bus

Don't you just love how pictures bring back such fun times and memories. Who cares if they are bad pictures of us... we were having a swell time and loved playing the game :) Thanks Toria (my friend from JetBlue) for giving me the tickets! We got good use out of them!

Memory Monday: My Mission Mommy (Trainer) Mandi Thomas

On May 12, 1999 I arrived at the destination that I would be living and serving with a stranger companion in for 18 months. I arrive in THE OHIO or the great OCM as we called it. It was the first time in my life that I had ever been away from home and I had no idea what to expect or what I was in for.

The first day you come to our mission field I came off the plane into this humid weather and the mission leadership took us right off the plane, straight down to German Village(outside of Columbus) to go tracking. After litterally the scariest experience of my life (having the first discussion turned over to you for the first time to real people) we went to the President's house for dinner and a testimony meeting.

I remember standing infront of the missionary board (where all the pictures of the current missionaries are) and Sister Johnson, the presidents wife showed me the picture of my trainer and told me how much I would love her and what a good missionary she was and I thought, she looks mean! hahaha. Looking back at that I laugh cause when I look at my picture that was on that board, I looked like I had a mental disability so you can't judge a book by it's cover!

Sister Thomas was nothing as what I labeled her from the picture. She was a bucket of laughs and we got along really well. We had plenty of adventures together. I am going to share just the really random ones, of course these aren't the ones that missions are made of.. more the days that made great mission stories :)

  • We saw topless women on high street
  • We got random calls from Kathy Bonomo about the things that she learned..."Sister Gazaway, today I learned that potatoes come from Idaho, there are 54 channels on cable TV and that ther are 50 states in the United States!" When these calls would come at all hours of the day or night we would gasp with laughter!
  • Second-hand high at 1 am and the traveling we would have to leave in the middle of the night to the traveling sisters house. (we lived on campus housing and all the apartments below and above us were pot smokers and listened to loud music all hours of the night. Some nights our entire room would be filled with smoke)
  • Ordered pizza from what we thought was Papa Johns with some fun money we were sent in the mail and it ended up being Papa Joes and it tasted like cardboard.
  • Worked at the temple open house
  • Made tons of Oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough and froze it....
  • Fought over who was going to carry the area book and why
  • Bonded over Sister Thomas tears
  • Taught the gospel
  • Worked in the mission office
  • played pranks
  • took pictures of random street signs
  • Yelled sinners every sunday while passing the golf course on our way to church and then laughed till our bellies ached (actually this was a district leader elder cambell)
  • Played hard on Pdays

How I adore my MUDDA as I call her. She started me off on my way to mission success and helped me to realize that I am on my mission to be myself and teach the gospel as myself.

We worked hard! Prayed hard and played hard! These were days never to be forgotten!

Thank you Sister Thomas for breaking me in easy with lots of love and laughs! I had the greatest experience as a missionary and you were there from the begining!

Today is Mandi's birthday and I want her to know that I really celebrate her birth and love her for everything that she is! Happy BDAY MUDDDA!

**mission pics to be posted as soon as I figure out how to scan them... Angie?***

Memory Monday... My Grandpa Schroeppel

About a week ago my dear friend Angie did a blog on a Daddy Daughter date that they did with the Achievement day girls in their ward. It reminded me of one of my favorite memories with my Grandpa Schroeppel when I was about 10 yrs old and in Merrie Miss (remember those days ). We did a daddy daughter activity( and since I didn't have a daddy at home to go with me Grandpa was delegated) called a Box Lunch Social. We were to decorate a box as unique as possible and make all the yummiest things we could possibly make to put inside. There was a contest for the best box lunch (we won that). Next we had a dad shaving competition as part of our relay race. They took the blades out and we shaved them (won that) then a pie eating contest and of course we won that! It ended with us recieving a letter our dad's (grandpa) wrote to us.. Sweetest thing I have ever read. I know I have that somewhere in my memory box. I will find it sometime this month and add it to this entry.

Growing up as a young child Grandpa had a full plate with 11 kids of his own and then 2 father-less grandkids to raise. I loved on Mother's Day our Saturday date with Grandpa to pick out the perfect gift for Mom. He let us choose anything that we wanted and it really made it so special for us.

I loved how Grandpa sacrificed to bring my Mom to pick me up from my mission in Ohio. I don't think I would have EVER got on that plane if I didn't have Grandpa, Grandma and my Mom forcing me on. What sweet memories I have with my Grandpa. He is full of love, charity, sarcasm, and honor.

I love you Gramps! Thanks for making events that could have seemed so lonely for a child without their own Dad there so memorable and special to me. That Daddy daughter date is in my top 10 of favorite childhood memories. YOUR THE BEST!

Memory Monday: Adventures in Illinois and surrounding areas

Today I was sitting around needing a laugh and so I started thinking of some of the crazy laughable times in my life and I instantly thought of Murphysboro, IL. and my adventures with Jen and mandy and company! :)

In Illinois we lived in the home of a lady who was serving a mission in NY. Her name is Sister Schaack. Oh how we love and adore Sister Schaack. I never lived with her...but I have stayed with her on returning visits and she is a gem!

This is our favorite room in the house. That couch is THE MOST comfortable thing ever! (She would just die if she new how many times we vegged, slept and ate on her beautiful white couch! but it just was so inviting and just drew us in!)

Some of my favorite laughable moments on this couch would be.. all 4 seasons of 24 in a month were watched on this couch, outrageous teasing moments were done on this couch, Totinos pizza, diet coke and Graeters ice cream were consumed in quanities we won't mention here, Computer time was done here, sleepy time was done here and some of the most awkward social gatherings you will ever witness took place in this very room! :)

While in Illinois Jen and I became Road-trippers. I went went all over the place. Several times to Chicago and St. Louis, a couple to Nauvoo and other history sites, Memphis, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana (Kim S and I), Arkansas (with my Dad's family for Thanksgiving...bless Jen's heart!), Iowa and I could pretty much name all the midwest states and I went there at one time or another while living in Illinois. The next few pictures are memories from those very roadtrips...

When we went back to visit my Mission in Ohio... My former investigator Bob Dempsey decided he wanted to see me do some Tae something.. this is Jen's fav memory (minus Carol at Golden Corral without her teeth in gumming her steak). I have lost all pride in posting this... but it makes me laugh gut laughter so it MUST go on my laughing memory blog.

This is the 3 of us in our element! Oh was this an experience!! How I love my Jen and Er! Erika came to visit us after we left her roommate-less at the Crestwood when we moved to Illinois. Funny part is that when she came to IL and we decided that we wanted to go to Kentucky (mind you 4 hours away) so that we could have her experience Graeters Ice Cream. So on a wim we took off for Kentucky! Laughing all the way. We went to stay at a hotel, ate at cheesecake factory, went to a movie, came back to hotel, went to the Kentucky Temple the next morning then PF Changs and then to Graeters. We are crazy! We all bought take home ice cream $50 worth each I believe! hahaha Who does that? We did! Then we couldn't find ANYWHERE from Illinois to St Louis to buy dry ice so Er could take it home on the plane... so she had to leave it.. bummer for her.. blessing for us!
This is one of the stupidest ideas that we ever thought of and one of the most hideous pictures but I had to share it cause it is so funny! We brought this on a trip thinking we would watch the TV like that.. we had gone to Liberty jail area to do an EFY training...isn't that funny. we were laughing like crazy.. don't worry it didn't last
This is Jen and I when we met Ryan Tucker in Memphis for dinner! We went to Rum Boogie.. oh how we loved the food and the saxophone player and jazz music. One of the fun memories we had.See the little man in blue.. we will call him "TAZMANIAN DEVIL" this is the little boy I worked with at the brain injury center that kicked the "trash" out of me, caused me to have syatica and gave me my grey tooth. Can you believe a little dude like that could beat me up.. I had to state trooper him on the ground till my big black co-workers (in the back row that you can see) came to my rescue. What a memory... I must say, I still loved little man taz after that.

Thanks for joining me for a little ditty down memory lane :)
